The use of artificial intelligence (AI) within healthcare settings is revolutionising delivery of services to patients, with the use of these technologies in clinical practise expected to rise exponentially in the coming years. AI-healthcare technologies use machine learning algorithms, enabling these technologies to mimic human intelligence and perform tasks previously requiring human input. However, application of these technologies in healthcare settings present numerous challenges including patient safety and cybersecurity. Equitable access to novel technologies is also of significant concern, to prevent further exacerbation of health inequalities. Using data from our horizon scanning report published in December 2023, we have sought to investigate types of algorithms used within these technologies, and which health conditions these technologies are being developed for. This has provided further insights into development trends of AI-based healthcare technologies and highlighted where further support for innovation is needed.
A Horizon Scan of Algorithms Used in the Development of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-Enabled Healthcare Technologies
This report provides a comprehensive review of algorithms used within AI-based healthcare technologies. We have explored the use of specific algorithms used within these technologies, and provide insights regarding their use in the diagnoses, treatment, and management of specific health conditions.
