This report provides an overview of a rapid horizon scan that was undertaken to help our stakeholders. We carried out a rapid review of the evidence in this area by examining clinical trial information, funding data and published evidence to better understand the landscape. There are two major types of oxygen therapeutics: haemoglobin (Hb)-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) and perfluorocarbon-based oxygen carriers. A variety of artificial blood products, predominantly HBOCs, were identified that are at different stages of development, from preclinical to those in current use.
Horizon Scan of the Artificial Blood Research and Funding Landscape
Artificial blood or blood products are used to support transport of oxygen around the body. Artificial blood research is a key area of interest due to the wide-reaching use of the products: from helping patients who have experienced trauma to use during organ transplantation, as well as for patients with blood disorders.
